2026 SF Giants avoid worst record in franchise history, but are still in bad company

There were times this season when it seemed like there was a very real possibility the SF Giants could have the worst record in the history of the franchise. Well, they have avoided that fate as they won their 63rd game of the year on Tuesday night which means the worst record they can have is 63-99.

All things considered, that’s actually borderline miraculous when one thinks about all of the injuries the team has sustained over the course of the season. Jung Hoo Lee is the only guy left from the Opening Day lineup and the roster is full of guys who are basically just placeholders and will either be in the minors or with other teams next year.

Yet, they have actually played better baseball as of late and should probably end up with 67 or 68 wins on the year which obviously isn’t good, but it’s not hard to envision a scenario in which the Giants failed to reach 62-100, the worst record in franchise history set back in 1985.

Now the next team to beat is the 2017 Giants. Even from the start of this year the 2026 team seemed vaguely reminiscent of the 2017 one and that team, even though it still had many fan-favorites from the championship years, ended up going 64-98 on the year. The 1984 Giants went 66-96 and the 1996 Giants went 68-94 so this is the company the 2026 Giants have right now. 

There is still hope despite a rough 2026 season for Giants

A lot has to go wrong to lose that many games and the Giants have certainly not had a ton go their way. It’s not like the team has been awful in all respects though. Rafael Devers ended up having a great year, Bryce Eldridge has proven he’s legit, and Casey Schmitt was having a breakout year before going down with an injury.

So there’s at least enough there to point to and feel like next season won’t be quite as bad, but a season like this can really rattle a team’s confidence. The 2017 season was followed by poor seasons in 2018 and 2019 so the fear is that will be the era of Giants baseball Buster Posey ends up restoring rather than the championship years.

At the very least though, we will not look back on the 2026 team and think “worst team in franchise history.” We won’t think of it fondly, but it at least won’t be the dark stain upon the franchise that is seemed like it was going to be for much of the season.
