Rafael Devers injury leaves Jung Hoo Lee alone as a depressing Giants constant

One of the few bright spots and reasons to watch the SF Giants the final few weeks of the season was Rafael Devers. He was one of the, if not the, hottest hitters in baseball and was on pace to hit 40 home runs and drive in 100 runs.

Unfortunately, it was revealed on Sunday that he had been playing through a core injury and the Giants decided to shut him down the rest of the season by putting him on the 60-day IL.

Now, the only player left from San Francisco’s Opening Day lineup is Jung Hoo Lee. He is on a very lonely island, playing alongside mostly guys who probably belong in Triple-A as this team tries to simply make it through this brutal season.

It’s pretty amazing that there has been this much turnover. It’s worth going over each player from the Opening Day lineup and where they are now.

Luis Arraez was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, Matt Chapman underwent season-ending surgery on his core, Rafael Devers just went on the IL, Willy Adames is done for the year due to elbow and back issues, Heliot Ramos was traded to the New York Yankees, Casey Schmitt tore his meniscus, Patrick Bailey got traded to Cleveland, and Harrison Bader crashed his scooter into a fire truck.

Truly astonishing.

Entire SF Giants roster has seen so much turnover this season

There’s been turnover on this entire roster. Logan Webb and Landen Roupp are currently the only two members of the rotation left from the start of the season after Robbie Ray and Tyler Mahle were traded and Adrian Houser suffered an injury. The bullpen is completely different from the start of the year as well. 

Really, this season just can’t come to an end soon enough. They should probably shut down Webb and Roupp and just have bullpen games the rest of the way and try to get through these final two weeks without losing anyone to a major injury.

Heck, maybe even put Lee on the IL and let the young guys like Scott Bandura and Turner Hill audition for next season.

We don’t know what next season will look like but one can only hope it will be better than this train wreck of a year. This team was bad before it was injured and in a weird way things have gotten better since some of the injuries so maybe they can turn things around in 2027.
