1 controversial trade SF Giants should make before trade deadline, 1 they must avoid

The MLB trade deadline will be here soon on August 3. The SF Giants will certainly be in contact with a lot of teams in the next week as they try to make some deals that one hopes will at least salvage this season a little bit if they can land some players who contribute in future seasons.

There are the obvious trade chips like Robbie Ray and Luis Arraez, but there are also some players the Giants could deal for a big prospect haul but it would not come without controversy.

Let’s take a look at two potential controversial trades the Giants could swing. One of them they should say yes to, the other they should turn down.

Controversial potential trades the SF Giants could be faced with at the trade deadline

Mock trade: Giants trade OF Jung Hoo Lee to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for OF Max Clark, LHP Andrew Sears, and C Michael Oliveto

The Giants are reportedly not open to trading Jung Hoo Lee, but if they got this offer from the Tigers they might just have to say yes.

Max Clark is the top prospect in Detroit’s system and he could be an eventual replacement for Lee. He’s a contact bat who is a plus defender so he has a similar profile, although his name is not quite as easy to chant which will upset the Hoo-Lee-Gans.

Andrew Sears is a promising young pitcher who could develop into a rotation piece down the road for San Francisco. They need to add more pitching to the farm system and he’d be a nice get.

Oliveto is a bit more of a wild card as a 19-year-old but since the catcher situation is unclear for the Giants it’s not a bad idea to get a guy with some upside.

A lot of fans who love Lee would be heartbroken if he got traded, but Clark would be a really good addition especially since there’s a chance Lee will opt out of his contract after 2027 anyway.

Mock trade: Giants trade RHP Logan Webb to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for RHP J.R. Ritchie, OF Eric Hartman, and RHP Owen Murphy

Buster Posey has said the Giants are not listening to offers on Webb so it would take something really special to get San Francisco to part with him. This trade would not be enough to get it done.

Atlanta could use some more starting pitching and Webb raised eyebrows when he changed his profile picture to him alongside Braves ace Chris Sale at the All-Star Game, but Atlanta would really have to pony up.

While the Braves would part with two top-10 prospects and Ritchie, who was the team’s No. 2 prospect entering the season, that’s just not enough to get rid of a guy who has been a bonafide ace.

To give up Webb the Giants should get at least one legitimate big league player in return. Ideally it would be a pitcher who could at least somewhat fill the void left by Webb but they should not give him up for prospects or young, unproven players alone. Maybe if the Braves included catcher Drake Baldwin in a deal that would get San Francisco's attention but that seems highly unlikely.

The Giants will most likely choose to hold onto both Lee and Webb at the deadline, but if they’re blown away by an offer for either they should be open to a deal.
