When the SF Giants got off to a good start to begin the season, they were consistently getting some great pitching. The Giants still have some soft spots on the lineup, and they should target a catcher at the MLB trade deadline.

Yes, they may have already done this with the addition of Rafael Devers. You can also make the case that Matt Chapman’s return will help the lineup that has been struggling during his absence.

However, it still feels as if there are some holes in this lineup where a team can easily pitch through to get out of an inning.

If there is one place that has been a hole in the lineup, it’s been from the catcher's spot. While Patrick Bailey has been elite defensively, the bat has been sputtering for a while now. It’s for this reason that Sean Murphy would be an ideal trade candidate to make Bailey the backup on the roster.

From the Braves' perspective, this makes sense. One of the reasons for this is that they haven’t ever gotten going and appear to be heading towards possibly selling. Interestingly, Murphy is currently splitting the job with Drake Baldwin. Both are hitting well, but Baldwin appears to be the long-term plan there.

The Giants are poised to add another bat and are already in win-now mode after adding Rafael Devers. Another thing that gets overlooked is the fact that Murphy played for manager Bob Melvin before being dealt to Atlanta. It’s been shown how much Melvin likes his guys who have played for him before.

Also, don’t put it past Buster Posey to make a move like this. It would be poetic given the fact that Bengie Molina was dealt in 2010 to make Posey the starter.

Murphy would ideally hit in around the 6th or 7th spot in the order. But so far this season, he has hit .225 with 12 home runs and 30 RBI. This is considerably more than anything the Giants have gotten from the catcher's spot. Murphy also has solid defense, to where you don’t have to worry about the defense slipping.

No matter how you look at it, an upgrade at catcher should be something that the Giants look at during the trade deadline.
