Yet another former SF Giants catcher mentioned as a future MLB manager

Why not all of them at this point?

The SF Giants have been connected to a number of former backup catchers to Buster Posey as they search for a new manager. Yet another former Buster backup has been mentioned as a potential future managerial candidate.

On the most recent episode of the Giants Talk podcast, NBC Sports Bay Area reporter Alex Pavlovic said he had heard the name Guillermo Quiroz thrown out as a potential future managerial candidate.

“But when Bob Melvin was first fired, and I'm calling some people around the league asking like, who are up and coming managerial candidates? One name I heard, not for this job, but like down the line, someone just knew I'm a Giants beat writer. It was like, remember Guillermo Quiroz?”

Pavlovic was clear to stipulate that Quiroz is not seen as a candidate for the current Giants opening, but it is still interesting that yet another former Giants catcher is seen as a future big league manager.

Giants fans may remember Quiroz from his time with the Giants in 2013 and 2014. In 2013 he slashed .186/.237/.302 with one home run and six runs batted in across 43 games. That one home run was a very memorable one though as it was a walk-off homer against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He was on the Giants very briefly in 2014, appearing in just two games and not recording a hit. That was the last time he played in the big leagues, but at least he got a ring for the 2014 season.

After his playing days, Quiroz has turned to coaching. He has bounced around as the manager of a few different minor league teams and is currently the manager of the Birmingham Barons, the Double-A affiliate for the Chicago White Sox.

Birmingham had an impressive record of 81-57 in 2025 so it seems Quiroz is getting some recognition for the good job he has done as manager.

Obviously, Quiroz is not the only former Giants catcher thought of as a future manager. Nick Hundley is the favorite for the job in San Francisco and Curt Casali has officially retired from playing and has been seen as a future manager as well.

Catchers often make for pretty good managers so it is not a big shock to see these names thrown around in manager talks.

If Quiroz does end up managing a big league club and ends up facing the Giants, at least the broadcast will have an easy excuse to play that memorable walk-off against the Dodgers.
