World Series champion makes a surprise visit to SF Giants Double-A affiliate

The Richmond Flying Squirrels received a surprise visitor this week. Four-time World Series champion Bruce Bochy made a trip out to the East Coast to scout the SF Giants affiliate.

Trey Wilson, who is the play-by-play broadcaster of the Flying Squirrels, shared a picture of Bochy in the booth with him and Todd Parnell.

Bochy has had a presence with the Giants this season. He is currently serving as a special advisor to baseball operations. That title tends to be a fluid one, but it often involves some ad hoc work for the organization.

Special advisors typically offer scouting help, on-field work, and influence roster decisions. Bochy played a role in at least one addition this offseason. He was a driving force behind the Tyler Mahle signing.

That contract did not play out as they had hoped. However, the Atlanta Braves might have a different perspective. The veteran pitcher has posted a 1.52 ERA in four starts since being traded to Atlanta.

The longtime manager vouched for Mahle, who he managed during his time with the Texas Rangers. Mahle joined the Rangers on a two-year deal while he recovered from Tommy John surgery. Last year was his first full season back, even if he missed some time on the injured list due to shoulder fatigue. He posted a 2.18 ERA across 16 outings.

Bochy and Mahle's tenure with Texas ended after 2025. As soon as he and the Rangers parted ways, it felt like there was an outside chance that he would return to the dugout in San Francisco. However, Buster Posey quickly poured cold water on those rumors, confirming that Bochy was not a candidate for the position. Instead, the Giants went with Tony Vitello.

The three-year run with Texas is almost certainly Bochy's final turn as a manager. He managed for 28 seasons, won more than 2,000 games, and led four teams on World Series runs. Bochy accomplished more as a manager than just about any other person in baseball history.

Bochy began his managing career in 1995 with the San Diego Padres. His routine is a little different these days, as he works with the Giants in baseball operations. He got a chance to scout the Flying Squirrels, who have put together a surprisingly strong year. They have a 71-51 overall record while securing a spot in the playoffs after clinching a first-half title.
