Will Clark has stark warning for SF Giants amidst awful start to season

Things could go off the rails pretty easily.

Things are looking bad for the SF Giants right now and there isn’t a ton of cause for hope. The team enters Friday night’s game at 14-23 and Giants legend Will Clark gave the team a warning after this dreadful start.

On his podcast with former MLB player Eric Byrnes, Clark said the following about the Giants

“I’m a big believer in 'this is a long season and what goes wrong early can go right late', but you can’t dig yourself a friggin' pit that you can’t get yourself out of early in the year…If you start getting buried early in the year, then the snowball starts going down the mountain and you can’t get it going the other way.”

Will Clark warns that things could start to snowball for the Giants

It sure feels like the snowball is gaining steam right now. The Giants are just 2-8 in their last 10 games and their offense has been so bad that it’s really hard to feel confident about their chances in any given game.

The pitching staff hasn’t been that bad. The Giants have a collective 3.96 ERA as a pitching staff which is the 11th best mark in MLB but the offense is averaging roughly 3.1 runs per game.

There are bad starts to a season, and then there are hopeless starts. This feels more like a hopeless start similar to the one the team got off to in 2017. That team was projected to win 80-something games but they got going the wrong way early and were just unable to turn things around.

Like the 2017 team, this iteration of the Giants has a lot of money invested in players who are underperforming. At least the 2017 team invested some of that money in players who played a huge role the team winning some World Series titles.

Most of the guys the Giants have money invested in haven’t even helped the Giants make it to the playoffs.

Clark was a big part of why the Giants were able to dig their way out of a hole as a franchise. The 1985 team went 62-100 and Clark was the headliner among a contingent of young players who at least got people excited about the Giants again in 1986.

Is there anyone who can dig them out of this hole? Well, maybe young guys like Bryce Eldridge, Daniel Susac, and Jesus Rodriguez could be pieces to build around.

This season isn’t completely destined to be another 1985 or 2017, but Clark always speaks his mind and he is right that things can spiral out of control fast so if the Giants want to avoid that they need to stop the bleeding fast.
