It's back! Baseball that actually counts and matters returns tonight as the SF Giants take on the New York Yankees. While the Giants have been stuck in neutral ever since their magical 2021 season, this feels like the year when things will be different.
Obviously, the biggest change for the Giants is new manager Tony Vitello. No one knows for sure whether this experiment is going to work out. We have not seen a manager come straight from the college ranks with no prior professional coaching experience so however it goes, it will be fascinating to see how the season turns out.
There is reason for optimism for the 2026 SF Giants
But it is not blind optimism to believe in this year's version of the team. It really does feel like the entire organization, from president of baseball operations Buster Posey on downwards, has something to prove this year.
Vitello wants to prove that he is not some college amateur who lucked his way into this job. Posey stuck his neck out to make this hire knowing that if it backfires it could potentially shorten his tenure as the head of the front office.
But most importantly, the entire roster has something to prove. Ace Logan Webb wants to prove that he belongs among he game's elite pitchers and also wants to get back to the playoffs after so many seasons of mediocrity.
Shortstop Willy Adames wants to continue to prove that the franchise-record contract he received last offseason was worth it and Rafael Devers can prove that his power is not limited to the east coast.
Even guys who are not on the Opening Day roster like Bryce Eldridge certainly have something to prove. Eldridge wants to be a star and this could potentially be his breakout season if he realizes his potential.
Homegrown players like Heliot Ramos can prove that he is not a complete defensive liability in the outfield while catcher Patrick Bailey wants to show everyone that he is more than just a Gold Glove-winning catcher and can actually be a consistent threat at the plate.
Everywhere you look, you see guys with a chip on their shoulder. That's a great mentality to have and Vitello seems like the perfect guy to foster that mentality especially with the Giants looking up at the behemoth that is the Los Angeles Dodgers in the division.
Vitello gives the team a flavor and an edge it was missing in 2024 and 2025 under manager Bob Melvin. The team felt lethargic at times in 2025 but under Vitello that should not, and really cannot, for his sake, be the case.
If it is another repeat of the last few seasons then Posey, Vitello, and everyone will come under even greater scrutiny.
Pressure can breed the best results, though. This doesn't mean that the Giants are going to win 100 games or make it to the World Series. There are plenty of roster holes and things can definitely go wrong. But they have enough talent on the team to be competitive and this just feels like a group ready to take a positive step in the right direction in 2026.
