On the same day that the SF Giants dismissed Bob Melvin, the Texas Rangers and Bruce Bochy mutually agreed to part ways. The details surrounding the parting of ways between the Rangers and Bochy might just point to the veteran manager wanting to continue his career.
Why decision to part ways might point to SF Giants legend Bruce Bochy's desire to continue managing
Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young told Jeff Wilson of DLLS Sports that the club plans to get younger amid a period of financial uncertainty. Young reiterated that Texas would not be rebuilding, but this does sound like they will be scaling back to some degree.
Without being able to give more of a firm picture, the Rangers and Bochy decided to part ways. The Rangers did leave the door open to stay by offering Bochy a spot in the front office.
The breakdown of this discussion did not sound like Bochy was no longer motivated to manage or that he was ready to re-enter retirement. It sounded like he simply did not want to manage a team that was not fully invested in winning. If they did, he would likely have agreed to an extension with the Rangers.
The longtime skipper turned 70 this year and has managed for 28 seasons. A manager with his type of résumé and experience likely has no desire to go through the pains and losses that often come with a rebuild, or some version of that. Teams often hire a younger and less experienced manager for that. They hire a veteran manager like Bochy when they feel like they have all the right pieces on the roster.
Bochy is now a free agent, and the Giants have a managerial vacancy. These things happened on the same day. It is hard to ignore that the nostalgia that would come with a reunion like this would be palpable.
Bochy had a legendary run with the Giants, including three World Series titles. No manager could excite the fanbase quite like bringing him back. That said, Bochy already has a legacy with the Giants. There is no need to disrupt that.
So, is the door open for him to return to San Francisco? The four-time World Series champion only added fuel to the fire on Monday night. He told John Shea of The San Francisco Standard that he would be open to a conversation with Buster Posey. There is a connection between Bochy, Posey, and the Giants that is just impossible to overlook. Bochy's desire to continue managing might be exactly what Posey wants in the next manager.
