The SF Giants Opening Day roster is becoming more clear as the number of players in camp have been whittled down. In terms of non-roster players, they only have four players remaining, including Lou Trivino, Max Stassi, Christian Koss, and Joel Peguero.

Which 4 SF Giants non-roster invitees remain in camp and what are their chances of making the Opening Day roster?

At least one of these players will make the Opening Day roster. Perhaps, even more than one player from this group is a candidate.

To do so, the Giants would need to make a corresponding move on the 40-man roster. This would require someone being removed either by being placed on waivers or transferring them to the 60-day injured list if applicable.

David Villar looks like the most likely candidate to be placed on waivers in the coming days. He is one of several players in Giants camp who are out of minor league options. This means that he needs to make the team or be put on waivers.

The Giants have not operated this spring with the intent of keeping him on the roster. Playing time has been sporadic, and he has been limited primarily to first base. The Giants have several options ahead of Villar on the depth chat at that position. The right-handed bat has tallied eight hits, including two home runs, with four RBI in 42 at-bats this spring.

On the other hand, Tom Murphy and now Jerar Encarnación could be candidates for the 60-day injured list. Murphy has been sidelined all spring after receiving two epidural injections. The Giants have not recently published a status on his prognosis. On the other hand, Jerar Encarnación suffered a hairline finger fracture in his left hand on Friday.

The power bat told Justice delos Santos of The Mercury News that he could miss between four and six weeks. He will also need a lengthy rehab assignment once he is ready for game action.

These moves could create opportunities for non-roster players. Lou Trivino seems like a lock to make the Opening Day roster. He joined the club on a minor league deal and has completed 8.1 scoreless innings this spring. It does not hurt that Trivino has a good relationship with manager Bob Melvin from their time with the A's.

Joel Peguero has made a positive impression with the Giants coaching staff and was even recognized with the Barney Nugent Award. He opened some eyes with a 100-MPH fastball in bullpens and games while registering 6.2 scoreless Cactus League innings.

The path to the Opening Day roster is a little cloudier for Max Stassi and Christian Koss. Stassi is competing with Sam Huff for the backup catcher role, but the latter occupies a spot on the 40-man roster, so he has the edge.

On the other hand, Koss has done a nice job this spring, both at the plate and in the field. He has shown to be capable of handling shortstop and made quality plays along the way. It does not hurt that he has slashed .351/.442/.514 with one home run and three RBI in 43 plate appearances. That said, the Giants only have so many moves to be able to open spots on the 40-man roster, and players like Trivino will be given the priority.
