On Wednesday, MLB Pipeline updated its top-100 prospect list. A pair of SF Giants prospects were among the biggest risers, with Luis Hernández coming in at No. 58 and Jhonny Level coming in at No. 64.
Two SF Giants prospects highlighted as biggest risers in MLB Pipeline's updated top-100 list
At No. 18, Bryce Eldridge still leads the way, followed by Josuar Gonzalez at No. 31. There is quite a bit of excitement with Hernández and Level as well.
It is hard to ignore the timing of this list being published. It went up as the Arizona Complex League (ACL) Giants dominated the Los Angeles Dodgers' affiliate by a score of 29 - 2. Yes, you read that right. The ACL Giants put up 29 runs.
Hernández and Gonzalez led the way, notching eight combined hits with 12 RBI. Hernández launched his fourth home run of the young ACL season.
There was plenty of buzz for Hernández heading into the season. He was signed out of Venezuela for just under $5 million, marking one of the largest investments by the Giants in the international channel.
The Giants debated whether to have the 17-year-old middle infielder begin the season in the ACL or the California League. They opted for the more conservative approach, but there is a good chance that he reaches the California League before the minor league season concludes.
On the other hand, Level was not viewed as a consensus top prospect heading into this season, but he has quickly changed that narrative. The switch-hitter had a breakout season in the ACL last summer before finishing the year with the San Jose Giants.
Level has carried that into this season, as he has been one of the best hitters in the league. He is slashing .328/.394/.539 (135 wRC+) with five home runs, 30 RBI, and 24 runs in 142 plate appearances for the San Jose Giants. He has cooled off a bit after a blistering month of April.
In Jim Callis' overview of the updated top-100 prospect list, he had a glowing review of Level's season so far.
"Up at Single-A San Jose, [Jhonny] Level has seized the attention of the industry by posting a .339/.406/.556 slash line through 28 games, and if he can maintain above-average power at just 5-foot-8, that would give him five 55-plus tools."Jim Callis on Jhonny Level
In the latest rankings, Hernández and Level moved up 23 spots and 22 spots, respectively. The Giants now have four prospects who are comfortably in the top-100 prospect lists. They also have a critical draft coming up to supplement that.
