No one really knew how new SF Giants manager Tony Vitello would fare in his first season as a big league skipper, but it seemed like a pretty safe bet that he would provide some interesting sound bites and would make postgame press conferences much more lively and entertaining.
He has certainly delivered on that front as evidenced by his Tiger Woods blooper after Thursday night’s victory:

Vitello's Tiger Woods tangent shows how unpredictable he is
Vitello was trying to make a point about slugger Rafael Devers and was about to compare him to golfing legend Tiger Woods but trailed off and sort of chuckled to himself as he said, “bad timing.” Of course, Woods just had yet another incident involving him and an automobile as he was arrested on suspicion of DUI and has announced he is getting help for his problems.
It seems like Vitello was trying to say that great athletes have a way of getting fired up with themselves and self-motivating. There were other ways to make that point, but Vitello loves a good analogy so sometimes he just can’t help himself even if it may not be the best one to use in light of recent events.
Whether it’s dropping Kanye West quotes or making an absurd number of references to the University of Tennessee, a Vitello presser always seem to be lively and entertaining. You truly never know whats going to come out of the guy’s mouth which is a pretty marked change from his predecessor Bob Melvin.
Say what you will about Melvin, both positive and negative, but the man was not known for his lively personality. His postgame pressers were usually pretty stoic, subdued affairs no matter what the outcome of the game was.
That’s just his personality and there’s nothing wrong with it. One could argue that sort of old school, even keep demeanor is the right one for a big league manager to have over the course of a long, 162-game season.
Yet the Giants brought Vitello into the fold for a reason and part of that reason was to try and infuse more energy into a team that often looked lethargic during losing streaks the last two season.
Vitello has certainly brought the energy and the postgame eccentricities as well. That sort of folksy charisma will play when things are going good after a game like last night, but it may start to get on the nerves of some fans if the team goes in the wrong direction.
