Tony Vitello proved he's not like other MLB managers after first SF Giants win

Who else would drop a Kanye quote?

Tony Vitello got his first win as an MLB manger in Monday night's series opener against the San Diego Padres. It is also the first win for the SF Giants in the 2026 season. The Giants needed it badly after a brutal first series against the New York Yankees and it feels even better coming against a Padres team that has dominated the Giants in recent seasons.

To celebrate the win, the Giants showered Vitello in what sounds like whatever was in the visiting club house. While there is no footage of the actual shower Vitello was rewarded with, it most likely looked like the shower Jung Hoo Lee received after hitting his first MLB home run which also occurred in San Diego.

It's unusual to see a big-league manager get treated like he's in a frat house rather than a clubhouse, but perhaps it is fitting given he was hired straight from the college ranks and it certainly differentiates him from the rest of big-league skippers.

"Adult beverages, but there was some other stuff mixed in," said Vitello when asked what he what he was doused with by his players as they celebrated the victory.

When asked what was else mixed in, Vitello said that it was the burning that tipped him off to there being more than just beer in the shower.

"I'll be plotting my revenge," said Vitello with a smile.

At the end of his postgame interview Vitello talked about the relationship he has with his players. It seems that he has the full-fledged support of the locker room which is comforting to know. The fact that the team gave him that unorthodox celebration seems to be a form of acceptance and embracing him as one of their own.

"We want to be a strong unit right now...but I really get the sense no matter what happens this group is going to get a lot closer together as the year goes on," said Vitello.

He also dropped a Kanye West quote, saying, "If you ask Kanye — I think he’s out with a new album — if you try hard, you die hard. Strange fellow, but he don’t miss much on the music, not that you asked.”

Yep, Vitello is probably the only MLB manager who is going to be quoting a controversial rapper while covered in alcohol after a regular season win, but the Giants did not hire him because he was like everyone else. Let's just hope that unique personality produces more wins otherwise the Kanye quotes won't come off as quite so charming.
