The SF Giants have made some headlines in recent days for their viral outfield celebration on Monday night. They cleaned things up and made it a little more family-friendly on Tuesday night but it seems that manager Tony Vitello, despite saying he had a conversation with the outfielders about keeping things in check, did not exactly abide by his own advice.

Some eagle-eyed viewers caught Vitello after San Francisco’s win on Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers doing the same thrust motion that the Giants outfielders were told to avoid doing.

Vitello subtly thrusts as SF Giants players told not to do the same

It was just a brief moment, but the cameras definitely caught it. Maybe this is a classic case of “Do as I say, not as I do.” It may also reveal that this directive to cool it with the thrusting celebration did not come from Vitello but from someone up above him. Perhaps Buster Posey or someone else higher up in the organization was not a fan of it and told Vitello to tell them to cut it out.

It’s not a shock to see him have a little fun with it though. Vitello was not known as being the most buttoned-up guy when the Giants hired him. He was known as a high-energy college guy who had some of his own celebrations at the University of Tennessee go viral.

He may have to be the adult in the room, but he’s clearly still a kid at heart. His unique and memorable quotes both before and after games are a reminder of that. Whether he’s referencing some movie or making a long-winded analogy he is very entertaining especially when compared to his predecessor Bob Melvin.

Everyone knew that pairing Vitello with Drew Gilbert, a guy who is just as wild as Vitello, would create some memorable moments. They’ve already fake sparred with one another in the dugout and it was not a shock to anyone that Gilbert was right in the middle of, and likely the instigator for, Monday’s celebration.

Maybe this celebration will carry on but in secret. It’s not the first time the Giants have had an immature celebration go viral. For those who remember Alex Dickerson’s hot streak back in 2019 they will remember the iconic chant that went along with that.

It’s a long season and sometimes baseball players resort to tomfoolery to get through it. Vitello is clearly not above that sort of behavior either so we will surely see more of this celebration, just perhaps in more subtle ways, throughout the rest of the season. If it keeps on bringing wins, then Giants fans will continue to eat it up.
