Tony Vitello and SF Giants may have gotten a boost from...Dave Chappelle?

Maybe the comedian can get the Giants turned around.

The SF Giants got arguably their best win of the season last night against the hated Los Angeles Dodgers. Tony Vitello had what might have been his most impressive game as the team’s manager so far with his deft handling of the bullpen and he may have comedian Dave Chappelle to thank for being in the right head space.

Vitello spoke to reporters ahead of Tuesday’s game and said that he’s been somewhat hesitant to go out in the city of San Francisco given the team’s rocky start to the season. While that’s understandable, it is a bit sad that he feels that way. Fans can be passionate but hopefully they wouldn’t go after the guy too hard especially since he’s a rookie big league manager.

Dave Chappelle may have helped Tony Vitello get in the right mindset

But he said he decided to go out on Monday night since the team had the night off and went out to eat at a restaurant where some Giants fans were nice to him and told him he had to go check out Chappelle at the Punch Line, a San Francisco comedy club.

Vitello said that he decided he needed to stop being afraid and went over to the show, working his way in by trying to see if there were any Giants fans who worked there. Eventually he got in.

“Dave was Dave. I needed a laugh and it was good to do something in the city. It was a lot of fun. I got a fist bump from Dave, too. So, if we win today you can give that credit.”

Well, I guess we have to give Chappelle some thanks. Apparently his set got Vitello in the right frame of mind because he pushed all the right buttons with the bullpen on Tuesday night on the way to a solid 3-1 victory in which he said he could really feel the Giants-Dodgers rivalry.

It’s probably taken Vitello time to get fully comfortable in his own skin with the Giants. Making the leap from Tennessee to the big leagues combined with his unique personality amplifies a rough start when the spotlight is on you, but maybe getting Drew Gilbert on the roster so he can spar with him in the dugout and going out and doing fun things in the city like the Chappelle show can get him more comfortable and not thinking too much.

He looked like a veteran big league manager on Tuesday so if the Giants start heading in the right direction then maybe that Chappelle show is what helped spur Vitello and the team in the right direction.
