The SF Giants are seemingly done adding to the starting rotation after signing Tyler Mahle, but they are being linked to an intriguing rotation arm in Miami Marlins starter Edward Cabrera. However, other teams are also in the mix.

The New York Yankees also have interest and it is reported that the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs are other clubs who have checked in on the hard-throwing righty. Could the Giants put together a trade package that would beat out big teams like the Yankees?

SF Giants can try to outbid Yankees for Edward Cabrera

The Giants reportedly checked in on Cabrera during the Winter Meetings but apparently the Marlins' asking price was high at that time. Maybe they are being a bit more reasonable now which could lead to some sort of deal.

Cabrera is an exciting young pitcher with a lot of upside. His fastball regularly reaches the upper-90's and last season he had a 3.53 ERA in 26 starts. He struck out 150 batters in 137 innings and crossed the 100-inning threshold for the first time in his big league career.

The biggest concern with him is his ability to stay healthy. If he could stay on the mound for a full year, his potential would seem to be sky-high.

He is under team control for several more years and is projected to make less than $4 million arbitration so it is understandable why the Marlins would want a solid return for him.

The Giants could put together a pretty enticing package of left-handed pitcher Carson Whisenhunt, right-handed pitcher Landen Roupp, and infield prospect Jhonny Level. That is quite a bit to give up as Whisenhunt is the organization's top pitching prospect, Roupp proved he can be a reliable starter in 2025, and Level is the No. 4 prospect in the system and is just 18 years old.

However, the Giants have Josuar Gonzalez who is also 18 and plays shortstop just like Level. Plus, trading Roupp to Miami would open a spot in the rotation and would allow Cabrera to likely be San Francisco's No. 3 starter in 2026.

It would be a risk for the Giants because they would be giving up a lot to get a player who is far from a sure thing. But if Cabrera was able to stay healthy and take that next step with the Giants then a deal like that would be well worth it and would likely outbid the Yankees and any other competitors for the flamethrower.
