SF Giants fans do not need to be reminded that Barry Bonds is one of the greatest hitters of all time. But a recent video of him and Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux showcases why Bonds was the best hitter of his generation and likely of all time.
In Barry Bonds' career, he slashed .262/370/.485 with 8 home runs and 18 RBI against Greg Maddux. He also drew 23 walks while striking out 16 times against the long-time Atlanta Brave. Whenever the two faced off against each other it was must-watch TV. These matchups featured one of the best hitters in MLB history against one of the best pitchers.
Recently, MLB Network got the two to sit down and break down the same at-bat against one another when Bonds took Maddux deep in 1998. They were not in the same room, but it was nonetheless fascinating to hear them both talk through the chess match they would play with one another. The video can be watched here.
SF Giants legend Barry Bonds shows why he is GOAT with Greg Maddux video
The first pitch of the at-bats was a cutter on the inside of the plate that jammed Bonds. Then Bonds, before it even plays on the video he is watching, predicts that the next pitch in the sequence would be an offspeed pitch low and away which is exactly what Maddux threw, thinking Bonds was joining to try to speed up after being late on the fastball.
Then Bonds says that he was sitting on that same cutter inside because that's where he liked the ball and it is where Maddux had success jamming him in the first pitch of the at-bat. Maddux tries to jam him inside again but Barry turned on the ball and launched it into the right field bleachers for a home run.
Bonds declares that Maddux was unwise to come inside a second time, saying, "You cannot come into the penthouse without an invite."
Maddux says that it was actually not a terribly executed pitch and he is right. If you look at where the pitch is, it is not out over the middle of the plate it is basically right on the inside corner. However, Bonds was just too gifted a hitter to give him any sort of chance on the inside of the plate.
Giants fans know Bonds is probably the greatest hitter who has ever lived, but to see how he could play the chess match and win against a pitcher as good as Maddux makes it clear that Bonds was a master at both the physical and mental aspects of hitting. Giants fans should certainly be thankful they had the privilege of watching Bonds for so many years.
