They did it with the same team

Daniel Susac wasted no time in introducing himself to major league pitching, as he recorded a hit in his first at-bat. In fact, he became the second Susac to do that very thing with the SF Giants.

The Susac brothers accomplish rare achievement with the SF Giants

Daniel Susac had about as memorable of a debut as a player could have. He tallied three hits and a walk in a 7-2 win over the New York Mets. The last Giants player to have three hits in his major league debut was Kevin Frandsen. He helped the Giants secure a 10-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 28, 2006.

Going back a few more years, longtime infielder Ramón Martínez also had three hits in his major league debut. The Giants defeated the San Diego Padres by a score of 5-2 in that game on June 20, 1998.

I remember that game well from Martínez. It is funny how certain baseball highlights just stick out in your memory. In the opposing dugout, Tony Gwynn was near the end of his Hall of Fame career, and Bruce Bochy was in just his fourth season as manager. That Padres club reached the World Series that year and were swept in four games by the New York Yankees.

I digress. Daniel Susac has a batting average and wasted no time in getting it. Interestingly, his brother, Andrew, also recorded a hit in his first major league at-bat. There is a technicality here with the elder Susac.

Chronologically, Andrew Susac did not appear in his first game with the Giants until July 26, 2014. However, his first hit came against the Colorado Rockies on May 22, 2014. How does that happen?

Susac's first official game was suspended after six innings due to inclement weather that day, and did not resume until September 1, 2014. By the time September rolled around, Susac was with the club. He finished out the game with two at-bats, including a base hit in his first plate appearance.

Since the game began on May 22, 2014, that became Susac's official debut. A bit of an oddity, but it counts in the books.

Sarah Langs of MLB.Com shared that the Susac brothers became the sixth duo since 1961 to record a hit in their first major league at-bat. There are quite a few Giants on this list, too. Heliot Ramos and Henry Ramos did so in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Jhonatan Soloano and Donovan Solano also accomplished that in 2012.

However, the Susac brothers became just the second brotherly duo to do it with the same team. Mickey Mahle and Rick Mahler both recorded a hit in their first at-bat in 1977 and 1979, respectively, with the Atlanta Braves.
