The SF Giants-Yankees Rafael Devers trade chatter seemingly will not die

The odds of this happening are slim.

The MLB offseason is officially here and the next month or so is going to be an absolute sprint before the lockout brings things to a grinding halt. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the SF Giants are quite active in the next month, but the trade chatter swirling about them dealing Rafael Devers to the New York Yankees just does not seem very likely.

To be clear, this is not coming from any major reporters although Buster Olney did speculate about how a Yankees-Giants trade involving Devers could make sense back during the regular season.

Bleacher Report has seemingly run with that line of thought too as Zachary Rymer pitched a trade idea in a recent article that would send Devers to New York in exchange for Luis Gil and Carlos Lagrange, two young pitchers for New York.

That would be an interesting deal since Gil formerly won AL Rookie of the Year and Lagrange is one of the best pitching prospects in New York’s system. Yet, both have dealt with injury issues though and neither is a sure thing.

The bigger issue is that the Giants probably aren’t open to trading Devers unless they were to land an immediate impactful arm in return. We know the Giants need pitching but would they really be willing to sacrifice their best hitter in order to get it?

Devers looked incredble by the end of 2026 for Giants

Devers proved in 2026, excluding the month of April, just how good he can be. He was on pace for 40 home runs and 100 runs batted in, two feats that would’ve seemed nearly impossible for a Giants hitter to accomplish just a few years ago but unfortunately his core injury prevented him from reaching those marks.

Unless the Giants are blown away by an offer for Devers, I expect them to run it back with largely the same lineup as last season and hope for better results which might be lunacy but isn’t completely crazy if they’re able to keep their core guys healthy and do a better job of giving veterans like Devers, Matt Chapman, and Willy Adames days off.

Now, if the Giants stink again in 2027 then all bets are probably off and a fire sale at the trade deadline becomes much more realistic because two straight really bad seasons would be a pretty clear signal that it’s time for San Francisco to hit the reset button.

A Devers-to-New York trade is fun to speculate about, but I just don’t see the Giants trading him this offseason. They’re going to give this core one more chance to prove they were worth all that money.
