The SF Giants have snuck back into the Wild Card race, as they sit four games behind the San Diego Padres and New York Mets in the standings. However, both the Mets and Padres hold the tiebreaker over the Giants, so they have an edge in this race.

If two teams end up with the same record in the playoff standings, then it goes to a simple head-to-head tiebreaker. The team with the better record against the other gets the nod.

If it comes to that, this is good news for the Padres and Mets, and bad news for the Giants. The Giants were 3-10 against the Padres this season, whereas they were 2-4 against the Mets.

Oddly enough, they were 5-1 against the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs have a firm grasp on a playoff spot with 21 games left to play. If for some reason, they take a nosedive in the final month and tie the Giants for a playoff spot, then the Giants would have an edge.

This is all to say that if you are looking at the Wild Card standings, you will need to tack on another game to the Mets and Padres' lead over the Giants to get a true sense of the race.

There are several other layers to the tiebreaker. If the head-to-head record was also split, then the tiebreaker is determined by intradivision record, interdivision record, or the last half of interleague games. More often than not, the simple head-to-head matchup determines the tiebreaker.

The Giants have been one of the best teams in baseball lately. They have won 11 of their past 12 games. This includes a perfect 4-0 record in September.

The Giants have done it with good pitching, but the offense has been the catalyst. They have hit a home run in 18 straight games. Giants hitters are hitting for power and with runners in scoring position. They also might have a player hit 30 home runs in a season for the first time in 21 years. Seriously, who is this team?!

The Giants looked like they were completely out of the playoff picture just a couple of weeks ago. It is amazing what a good winning streak can do. Despite this, the Giants entered Saturday morning with a 6.0 percent chance of reaching the playoffs, per Fangraphs. The odds remain low, but at least they are making the final month of the season fun.
