The SF Giants announced that they will be retiring Jeff Kent's jersey No. 21 after he was elected to the Hall of Fame. There will be a celebration next season to retire the number and honor Kent for his accomplishments.
Kent's induction into Cooperstown came as a bit of a surprise, but he did put up some great numbers in his career with his best seasons coming in a Giants uniform.
Unlike someone like Buster Posey, whose No. 28 will never be worn by a Giant again until it is formally retired, the No. 21 has been donned by many a Giant in the years since Kent wore it from 1997 to 2002. Let's take a quick trip down memory lane and remember every Giants player who wore the No. 21 after Kent.
Every SF Giants player who wore No. 21 after Jeff Kent
Ruben Rivera
Rivera spent just one season with the Giants in 2003 and hit .180 in what ended up being his final big league season.
Carlos Valderrama
Valderrama played just one big league season, as he had one hit in seven at-bats with the Giants in 2003.
Eric Young
Young appeared in just 26 games with the Giants in 2003 and donned the No. 21.
Tony Torcato
Torcato was with the Giants from 2002 to 2005, appearing in 43 games across that span while wearing four different numbers. He was No. 21 in 2004.
Jason Ellison
Ellison slashed .222/.273/.383 in 86 games during the 2006 season while wearing the No. 21.
Ryan Klesko
Klesko spent his final big league season with the Giants in 2007 and he wore No. 21.
John Bowker
Bowker spent his first two big league seasons wearing No. 21 with the Giants in 2008 and 2009.
Freddy Sanchez
Sanchez is one of the key members of the World Series teams who sort of flies under the radar. He was huge for the Giants during the 2010 season and hit three doubles in Game 1 of the World Series. Back injuries derailed his career after that, but he wore No. 21 with pride.
Nick Noonan
Noonan spent a decent amount of time with the Giants in 2013 as he his .219 in 62 games and when he was called up to the Giants again in 2015 he wore No. 21 again.
Tony Abreu
In between Noonan's two non-consecutive stints wearing No. 21 in a subtle nod to Grover Cleveland, Tony Abreu donned the number in 2014 and got a nice World Series ring despite not recording a hit in three games.
Conor Gillaspie
Gillaspie wore No. 21 in his second stint with the Giants and he provided some magic in that jersey. He hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the 2016 Wild Card game against the New York Mets and then delivered a clutch triple in Game 3 of the NLDS as it seemed like he was the second coming of Travis Ishikawa, but then the bullpen blew it in Game 4.
Stephen Vogt
Now the successful manager of the Cleveland Guardians, Vogt wore the No. 21 proudly during the 2019 season when he had to play a decent amount due to Buster Posey's injuries.
Joey Bart
The highly touted Bart wore No. 21 in 2020, 2022, and 2023. Unfortunately, things never worked out in San Francisco for Bart and he is now with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Aaron Sanchez
Aaron Sanchez was a starter with the Giants for parts of the miracle 2021 season as he had a 3.06 ERA in nine appearances.
Blake Sabol
Sabol wore the No. 2 in his rookie season with the giants, but after the team signed Jorge Soler he switched things up to 21.
Andrew Knizner
A lot of Giants catchers wore 21 in recent years, and you can win Giants trivia with your friends if you remember that Knizner was the last Giant to wear 21 before they retired the number to honor Kent.
