The Blue Jays are having the offseason the SF Giants should be having

They are going for it all.

The SF Giants have been fairly quiet this offseason. Compare that to the way the Toronto Blue Jays are behaving and it makes it even more frustrating that the Giants are sitting on their hands with big players still available.

The Blue Jays came devastatingly close to beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2025 World Series. Had just one minor thing broke their way in either Game 6 or 7 they likely would have won. Yet, they could not get it done but it looks like they are doing everything in their power to get back there.

SF Giants should be acting more like the Blue Jays

So far this offseason, Toronto has signed starting pitcher Dylan Cease, pitcher Cody Ponce, former Giants reliever Tyler Rogers, and and Japanese infielder Kazuma Okamoto. They also retained starter Shane Bieber.

Not only that, but they remain connected to arguably the biggest free agent on the market in Kyle Tucker. This is a team that is willing to spend what it takes to win.

Sure, some of those deals are risky and one can argue the Blue Jays overpaid for some of those free agents. But at least they are going all out to field a competitive team.

Meanwhile, the Giants have made additions this offseason but they have been minor ones. Those hoping for a dream offseason have instead been treated to modesty that has left some insiders perplexed by the way they are behaving.

The biggest signing this far has been a two-year, $22 million deal for Adrian Houser. The next biggest after that is Tyler Mahle on a one-year $10 million pact. Both sensible additions, but not exciting by any stretch nor do they suggest the front office is going all out to win.

Giants chairman Greg Johnson made it clear early in the offseason that the team was not looking to spend a lot of money. They clearly do not want to exceed the luxury tax and even though they have some wiggle room, it seems like the Giants are not intent on taking on another big contract.

But if the Giants are going to try to be competitive in an NL West division where there are two teams clearly better than them, they are going to have to make some moves even if they carry risk.

The Blue Jays are showcasing what it looks like when a team is trying to win. That does not always lead to success, but at least they are trying which is more than can be said for the Giants.
