The SF Giants have often spent heavily in international free agency but with little to show for it. What are the three largest international signing bonuses in franchise history?
The 3 largest IFA signing bonuses in SF Giants history
January 15 marks the opening of the new international free agency cycle. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a long and fruitful career for many prospects.
Now that the Giants are out of the Roki Sasaki sweepstakes, they can shift their focus back to this year's class. We have some of the high-level details here.
There is a good chance that the Giants finalize most of the deals within the first couple of days. Before we get there, we thought we would take a look at the largest bonuses signed thus far. I should caution that investing heavily does not always translate to premier prospects. There are a few factors that go into a player's signing bonus.
Lucius Fox - $6 million
No one is topping this one anytime soon. The Giants' total bonus pool is not even that high this year. Fox signed with the Giants out of the Bahamas for $6 million.
The speedy infielder was included in the unpopular deal to acquire Matt Moore. In total, Fox has tallied 28 plate apperances in his major league career and did not play professionally in 2024.
Rayner Arias - $2.7 million
The Giants hope that outfield prospect Rayner Arias can become one of the team's best prospects in the near future. He signed for $2.7 million out of the Dominican Republic in 2023. Arias was recognized for his baseball IQ and makeup, much of which was gained from spending his younger years around pro baseball players.
The 18-year-old prospect has been slowed by wrist ailments in recent seasons. He did put together an impressive season in the Dominican Summer League in 2023 where he posted a 1.333 OPS with four home runs and 21 RBI in 76 plate appearances before sustaining a season-ending wrist injury.
Marco Luciano - $2.6 million
Marco Luciano was considered one of the best prospects in the 2018 international free agency class when he received a $2.6 million signing bonus. That class included Luis Matos and Jairo Pomares.
In recent years, Luciano had been considerd one of the best prospects in baseball. That has not translated to the majors yet as he has posted a .590 OPS in 126 sporadic plate appearances.
