Starting pitching is far from only need for SF Giants going into trade deadline

There are definitely other areas for improvement.

The SF Giants have all sorts of problems right now. While starting pitching is an obvious need heading into the July 31st trade deadline, they could also improve in a big way at second base and in right field.

With the Giants scuttling the way they currently are, winless since the All-Star break, it is not an exaggeration to say that pretty much all aspects of the team are in need of improvement. While that is not possible, there are some obvious areas the front office could try to upgrade.

Starting pitching far from the only area of need for SF Giants

While the Rafael Devers trade was supposed to be the big move that bolstered San Francisco's lineup, that has not happened. This is not entirely Devers' fault, he is just one batter in the lineup and the rest of the lineup has not been picking up the slack.

One area of weakness is in right field. Mike Yastrzemski has been getting the starts against right-handed pitching while Luis Matos has been seeing more time against left-handed pitching. While both have had solid moments this year, neither has been consistent enough.

Yastrzemski is on a one-year contract so he will be a free agent after this season. The Giants could view that as an opportunity to get some sort of upgrade like with a trade for a Bay Area native outfielder. It would be difficult, but with the way things are going Buster Posey can view this trade deadline as an opportunity to help the team ahead of next season by circumventing free agency.

Second base is another area of potential improvement. Tyler Fitzgerald was supposed to be the guy coming into the year after his breakout 2024 showing, but his struggles opened the door for Casey Schmitt who has done quite well both with the bat and his glove.

Yet, Schmitt is a streaky hitter in a lineup full of streaky hitters so the Giants could look to get a more consistent bat. If Buster is feeling bold, perhaps he could swing for the fences by trying to land Eugenio Suárez, whose name has been in trade rumors, and put him at second base even if that is unlikely.

The Giants have a lot of areas they can improve, but second base and right field seem like the two spots that can realistically be upgraded with other guys entrenched pretty much everywhere else. We will see if Posey tries to upgrade these spots.
