While SF Giants fans will forever love Hunter Pence the player for what he did in helping deliver two World Series titles in 2012 and 2014, fans are becoming a little more split on Hunter Pence the broadcaster.
Just like when Pence was a player, his style as a broadcaster is a bit unorthodox. He’s a bit quirky, not everything he says sounds quite right, and he is relentlessly positive.
For instance, when the Giants hit their sixth grand slam of the season on Friday against the Chicago Cubs, Pence said, “SLAM CANCISCO” while many pointed out that “Slam Francisco” rolls off the tongue much easier.
It’s just one instance that is emblematic of Pence’s silly style in the booth. Some aren’t a fan and have been vocal about it on social media.
They have to do something about Hunter Pence https://t.co/CoeVYOZew6

Despite negativity, Hunter Pence is amazing both as a player and announcer
Then there are others who are more than fine with Pence’s goofiness in the booth. It does at least add some levity to the game and levity has been in short supply so far in what has been a very disappointing season for the Giants.
Count me in the latter camp. Pence is silly but that’s part of why he is so loved. When he was giving crazy speeches to the team back in 2012 it was a bit corny and over the top but it worked out pretty well.
Maybe more curmudgeonly fans who watch the team just to wallow in anger don’t like his relentless positivity. It’s hard to spin things positively about the 2026 Giants but Pence finds a way to do it.
Announcers are something fans will always complain about, though. There are even some Giants fans who take issue with Kruk and Kuip if you can believe it. Some announcers just rub people the wrong way and that’s their right even if they should maybe cut Pence a little slack given the fact he will always be a legend in San Francisco.
For those who do not like Pence in the booth, Sunday will not offer a reprieve even though it is a nationally broadcast game on NBC and Peacock. Pence will serve as an analyst for the broadcast along with Jim Deshaies and Jason Benetti will handle play-by-play.
The Giants will take on the Cubs at 5:30 PST looking to win the series in Chicago and maybe the team can hit another grand slam so Pence can reprise the “SLAM CANCISCO” call that irked so many.
