As the SF Giants look ahead to the offseason following a dreadful 2026 season, the priority is obvious: pitching, pitching, and even more pitching. The starting rotation will be a point of emphasis and one pitcher who has been a staple of the Toronto Blue Jays’ rotation the last few years could be an ideal fit.
Shane Bieber is coming off an okay year with Toronto, but just like his last few seasons it was marred by injury. Bieber made 11 starts in 2026 and had a 4.37 ERA while striking out 44 and walking 24 in 55 and 2/3 innings of work.
In 2025 with Toronto he had a 3.57 ERA in seven starts and surrendered only seven walks across 40 and 1/3 innings. Typically in his career he’s been a guy who limits walks which is something that president of baseball operations Buster Posey talked about in his end of season presser.
The Giants are likely going to focus on guys who pound the strike zone so even if Bieber has been banged up the last few years he could be a guy they zero in on especially if he comes at a discount. We know how the Giants love a bargain pitcher and he could be one of the better bargains available in free agency.
Shane Bieber may not want to leave Blue Jays
It won’t be easy to lure him away from Toronto, though. He surprised many observers with his decision to exercise his player option last offseason and he’s already left hints that he would like to return to Toronto.
The Giants may be lucky that the Blue Jays missed the playoffs and didn’t have a great year because that could mean they look at other options as they try to avoid a repeat of the 2026 season where they came up short of expectations.
San Francisco could probably get Bieber for a one-year deal in the $10-15 million range. He is a two-time All-Star and he won the AL Cy Young Award during the shortened 2020 season when he was with the Cleveland Guardians, but that was a while ago and he hasn’t been healthy enough to warrant a big contract.
Bieber is a guy who has seemed like a potential fit for San Francisco for a while now so maybe this offseason the Giants finally bring him aboard to pad out their rotation a bit. Heck, maybe they can get Kevin Gausman too and snag two pitchers who were with the Blue Jays in 2026.
