UPDATE: The Giants and Yankees were able to make it into the top of the 6th inning with the Giants up 9-1 before the tarp was rolled out onto the field yet again due to rain. The game has been called and the Giants are victorious. The rest of this article was written before the game began.
The SF Giants were set to take on the New York Yankees tonight at 4:05 PM PST but that will not happen as the game will be delayed and the new first pitch will be at 4:30 PM PST. The tarp was on the field but it has since been removed.
San Francisco Chronicle reporter Shayna Rubin posted a picture of the tarp on the field and that was less than a half hour before the game was set to begin but thankfully it has since been removed..
SF Giants-Yankees game may be delayed due to rain
During SF Giants pregame on NBC Sports Bay Area, hosts Laura Britt and Sergio Romo talked with Jon Miller and Javier Lopez who will be calling the game from New York.
Miller said the hope was that rain would hold off until later in the evening but it seems that the rain came in a little earlier, and was a bit more intense than expected. There was activity on the field behind them though with some people on the field appearing to remove the tarp. Shortly thereafter Britt said they were given a time of 4:30 PST as a potential first pitch time which is what Rubin reported on social media as well.
Obviously, neither team would want to have to make this game up later on in the year, especially not the Giants. Those weird East Coast makeup games always make for headaches later in the year so one hopes the teams can play the game somehow, whether it is tonight or if they have to finish it tomorrow so they can still get all three games in the series in the books.
The unfortunate thing is that the weather in New York is not supposed to be much better tomorrow as showers and cold weather are expected for much of the weekend. That is the tough part about having a road trip out east this early in the year for the Giants. The weather is still pretty bad in most of the country so there is always the potential for a delay.
Thankfully, the delay will not be too long as first pitch will commence at 4:30 PST. The game will also feature a new leadoff hitter for the Giants which should be interesting. Let's just hope they can get in nine innings without weather complicating matters any further. This article will be updated with any further information as it becomes available.
