SF Giants workhorse Logan Webb has led the NL in innings pitched in each of the past three seasons. Not only that, but he has completed more innings than any pitcher this decade.
SF Giants workhorse Logan Webb has been the most durable pitcher of the 2020’s
Webb was inserted into the Giants rotation on a full-time basis early in 2021. He has competed with pitchers like old friend Kevin Gausman and older friend Zack Wheeler for most innings pitched during that stretch.
Midway through the 2025 season, Webb inched ahead of Wheeler in that category. Wheeler has been one of the most durable pitchers this decade, but landed on the injured list after needing thoracic outlet syndrome surgery.
Similar to Wheeler, Webb’s career has been defined in part by durability. The 2025 season was no different in that regard, as he made 34 starts for the Giants. A complete workload for a starter is 32 starts, and any number above that is becoming increasingly rare. Webb wants the ball every fifth day.
Whether the baseline year is 2020 or 2021, the conclusion is the same regarding Webb’s workload. 2020 is a cleaner baseline given that it includes the full decade.
Since 2020, the two-time NL All-Star has thrown 1,022.2 innings. He is the only pitcher to surpass the 1,000-inning threshold during that time. Gausman is second in that category with 985.1 innings, followed by Wheeler at 979 innings.
Free-agent starter Framber Valdez is fifth in innings pitched with 973. While the Giants rotation could definitely use more volume, they have rounded out that unit with the additions of Adrian Houser and Tyler Mahle.
Incredibly, Webb has accounted for nearly 25 percent (24.1 percent to be exact) of the innings pitched out of the Giants rotation over the past six seasons. There is a sharp contrast between the innings pitched by Webb and the Giants rotation as a whole.
Since 2020, the Giants rotation has completed the third-fewest innings at 4,239. It is worth noting that this number is being watered down by openers and bullpen games, but that strategy has not been unique to San Francisco.
In sports, availability is one of the best abilities and it holds considerable value. Webb has been one of the most available pitchers in baseball during his career. Not surprisingly, he has merited serious consideration for the NL Cy Young Award over the past three years.
