The SF Giants made a roster move ahead of Friday’s game against the Chicago Cubs. Carson Seymour was optioned back to Triple-A, and Ryan Walker was recalled, per the team’s transaction log.
Seymour was recalled last week to give the Giants a fresh arm in the middle of a 10-game road trip. He struggled in both of his outings, allowing seven earned runs with two strikeouts and two walks in 4.1 frames.
The right-handed pitcher flashes an intriguing pitch mix, including a mid-90’s fastball and an upper 80’s power slider. Seymour has mixed in a low 90’s cutter with more regularity as well. However, his control leaves something to be desired.
In Seymour’s latest outing, he allowed four earned runs while recording just four outs. A lot of that damage came with his sinker catching too much of the middle of the plate.
Presumably, the 27-year-old pitcher will return to the rotation for the Sacramento River Cats. The Giants may want to consider an eventual move to the bullpen with him, where he increases the usage of his slider over his fastball.
SF Giants add back former closer after stint in Triple-A
Seymour has a 4.04 ERA in 11 outings for the River Cats this season. Ryan Walker will take his place on the major league roster.
Walker was optioned to the minors in May. According to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area, he first went to Arizona to work on a mechanical change and to adjust his pitch mix.
That adjustment in pitch mix was notable, as Walker was leaning on his slider more than he has in the past. It paid dividends in Triple-A. He posted a 1.93 ERA with seven strikeouts and three walks in 9.1 innings with Sacramento. The topline numbers were promising, but he also was not able to get hitters to swing and miss as he had in the past.
Regardless, the bullpen is in a rough position. The Giants should use these next few months to evaluate whether anyone can help them in future seasons. Walker has done it before, even if it has been a struggle since the start of 2025. He pitched a scoreless inning on Friday night, as he looks to rebuild his case to be a leverage arm again.
