SF Giants should have major regrets they let the Dodgers get this player

No, not Ohtani or Yamamoto.

SF Giants fans have been forced to watch the Los Angeles Dodgers succeed in the MLB playoffs. They have also had to watch Tommy Edman play well, a player the Dodgers traded for at the deadline that the Giants should have made a push for.

The Giants had a quiet trade deadline in 2024 which was characteristic of the Farhan Zaidi era. Clearly, Zaidi did not feel the team had enough juice to make the postseason so he basically punted, trading away Alex Cobb and Jorge Soler while making a modest addition by trading for Mark Canha.

The Giants continued their mediocrity after the trade deadline and missed out on the postseason for the 3rd straight season. One could argue Zaidi’s timidness at the deadline helped contribute to his ouster as president of baseball operations.

In retrospect, there were probably not a lot of trades the Giants could have made that would have allowed them to make the postseason. Not many high impact bats were available, but they did miss out on one key player.

SF Giants should regret not trading for Tommy Edman

Tommy Edman is a player who has always seemed destined to be a Giant. The Stanford product has been a solid big league player since his debut and he comes from an organization in the St. Louis Cardinals that emphasizes the same fundamental baseball that the Giants have been known.

Plus, with how weak and inconsistent the Giants were at second base and shortstop this past season, adding a guy like Edman who can play second base, shortstop, and even center field would have been a huge addition to the team.

Instead, Edman went to the Dodgers. Los Angeles needed help up the middle as well and they have proven that they are not afraid to make moves at the deadline. His numbers in the regular season were not phenomenal as he hit .237/.294/.417 with 6 home runs and 20 RBI.

However, Edman has come up with the goods in the postseason hitting .365/.358/.577 with 2 home runs and 13 RBI in 52 at-bats thus far in the playoffs. It has hurt to see him be a sort of Marco Scutaro-esque character for the Dodgers.

To be clear, I do not think that if the Giants had traded for Edman that they would have made the playoffs. I do not think he would’ve added 7 or 8 extra wins for the team especially if he put up the same regular season numbers he did with the Dodgers.

However, adding Edman would have positioned the Giants much better for 2025. With the emergence of Tyler Fitzgerald, Edman could have been the shortstop of the future for the Giants while Fitzgerald would have been the starting second baseman. They have similar profiles with their versatility but Edman would have done a lot to stabilize the shortstop position for the Giants going forward. Instead, they are probably going to have to throw a bunch of money at a free agent shortstop.

Plus, trading for Edman would have had the added benefit of preventing him from going to the Dodgers. If the Giants aren’t going to be competitive, at the very least they should trade for guys just to make sure the Dodgers do not get them and add to their super team.

Alas, the Giants did not make a trade for Edman and now he is aiding the Dodgers in their pursuit of a World Series which should make Giants fans sick.
