The SF Giants are a bad baseball team and, typically speaking, bad baseball teams tend to be sellers at the trade deadline. The Giants are 27-41 on the season so at this rate they could have something of a fire sale in late July and early August.
If president of baseball operations Buster Posey is smart, he will try to completely undo the team’s offseason at the deadline. That means getting rid of the four “big” players the team signed in free agency.
The most controversial of these would be Luis Arraez. He has been phenomenal for the Giants at second base and has been his usual self at the plate, hitting .326/.360/.438 with two home runs and 25 runs batted in.
There is a case to be made for the Giants to extend Arraez, but the team already has so much money committed to Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, and Rafael Devers that they may be afraid to give out another long-term contract.
Trading Arraez to a contender in need of a reliable bat should get the Giants a decent return and, more importantly, would allow the Giants to move Casey Schmitt to second base where he will be more comfortable defensively.
Harrison Bader should also be dealt. It made sense for the Giants to sign him in the offseason since they needed to upgrade their outfield defense, but he has been injured for the most part and has hit a disappointing .170/.198/.358 on the year.
Trading him could open the door to a platoon of Drew Gilbert and Jonah Cox in center field so the Giants can find out if either guy is worth keeping around long-term.
It may be a little harder to trade Bader since he’s under contract for 2027 as well, but a team in need of a veteran outfielder may come calling. Perhaps the New York Yankees will reach out since they could use some outfield depth after losing Aaron Judge to injury.
Giants also need to get rid of their two rotation signings
The Giants should also obviously get rid of the two rotation additions they signed in the offseason. Fans were not all that enthused at the prospect of Adrian Houser and Tyler Mahle in the rotation and that lack of excitement has been warranted.
Both pitchers have been disappointing so the Giants should try trading them both to teams in need of some starting pitching depth or maybe a team looking for a long reliever in the bullpen.
The Giants wouldn’t get much in return but they need to clear a permanent spot in the rotation for Trevor McDonald and if they got rid of them both that could make room for Carson Whisenhunt who has been great in Triple-A.
Robbie Ray will likely be traded too and that could make room for Carson Seymour or Blade Tidwell in the rotation. It will be way more valuable for the Giants to see their young rotation arms rather than two guys who clearly never should have been signed by San Francisco.
It would be a heck of a lot more fun if the Giants were buyers at the deadline, but they need to make the most of this bad situation and clear the deck for some of their younger players.
