SF Giants reportedly on rumored 2B target's no-trade list

This makes a deal feel unlikely for a number of reasons.

An upgrade at second base is not the first move many would have thought the SF Giants would pursue this offseason given the need for more pitching, but the recent rumors suggest that a move could be made soon.

The Giants were recently linked to Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte but reporting from Ken Rosenthal in The Athletic revealed that the Giants are one of five teams on Marte's no-trade list.

SF Giants have an even more uphill battle to land Ketel Marte

The other teams listed are the Athletics, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, and St. Louis Cardinals. It is an interesting list for Marte and is only going to make a trade for Marte, which was already unlikely, even harder to pull off.

Players can of course waive their no-trade clauses. Sonny Gray did that so the Cardinals could trade him to the Boston Red Sox earlier this offseason. However, since Marte is on an NL West rival and has the Giants on his no-trade list, San Francisco would have to offer up something really attractive to Arizona and somehow get Marte on board to waive that clause in his contract.

Those are a lot of obstacles to overcome, especially when the Giants have been linked to another second base target in Brendan Donovan of the Cardinals.

The Diamondbacks were reportedly willing to trade Marte at the trade deadline in 2025 and it was a bit of a surprise that they did not since the team was basically having a fire-sale after a rough first half to the season.

The 32-year-old Marte is coming off two straight All-Star seasons. In 2025 he slashed .283/.376/.517 with 28 home runs and 72 runs batted in. He has been an incredibly solid offensive producer for the last three seasons so there will likely be no shortage of suitors for his services this offseason.

There will be some questions about Marte's presence in the clubhouse after he took some heat in 2025 for missing games and there were some rumblings that teammates were upset with Marte for taking games off.

Teams would also have to be willing to take on the rest of his six-year, $116.5 million contract which is a bit of a risk given he is on the wrong side of thirty.

The Giants may be lucky they are on Marte's no-trade list given those issues even though his bat would certainly be welcome in the lineup. Nonetheless they will probably have to look elsewhere to upgrade at second base.
