New SF Giants manager Tony Vitello has reportedly made the first hire to his coaching staff. According to Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic, former San Diego Padres manager Jayce Tingler is set to join the Giants’ coaching staff.
SF Giants reportedly add former San Diego Padres manager to the coaching staff
The Giants and former Padres managers is just a tradition that the club cannot quit. They have had some obvious successes, with Bruce Bochy coming over from San Diego after the 2006 season. That worked out pretty nicely for San Francisco.
On the other hand, Bob Melvin joined the Giants after a two-year run with the Padres. While he managed a pair of talented rosters in San Diego, it is fair to say that club fell short of expectations.
While it often too easy to place blame on the manager when a team fails to meet expectations, there were plenty of other factors as well. The Padres seemingly have a leadership void on the roster, and team president of baseball operations A.J. Preller is one of the most aggressive executives in baseball, but he also is difficult to work with.
The Giants will try their hand with another former Padres manager. This time, it will not be as a manager, but as a key role on the coaching staff. Andrew Baggarly notes that Jayce Tingler’s role has not been specified yet.
Connections often open the door for hirings, and this one is no different. Tingler and Tony Vitello were college teammates at the University of Missouri. They remained close friends after college.
Tingler was drafted in the 10th round of the 2003 draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. His playing career ended after the 2006 season, and he immediately transitioned into coaching.
After the 2019 season, Tingler was hired by the Padres to become their manager. He was let go following a disappointing 79-win season in 2021.
Tingler was immediately hired by the Minnesota Twins to serve as the bench coach on Rocco Baldelli’s staff. He served in that role for four seasons. In September, the Twins announced that they were moving on from Baldelli after seven seasons. They replaced him with veteran manager Derek Shelton.
When a new manager takes over, it usually leads to sweeping changes to the coaching staff. That process has begun in Minnesota, and now one of their former coaches is set to join a familiar face in San Francisco.
