MLB.Com released its weekly Power Rankings on Monday morning. For the SF Giants, they came in at No. 8, unchanged from the prior week's rankings.
SF Giants remain stagnant in latest MLB Power Rankings
Flores got a shoutout in the latest rankings. He had a career game at the plate on Friday, blasting three home runs and eight RBI in a 9-1 victory over the A's. As of Monday morning, he leads baseball with 42 RBI, edging out Aaron Judge, who has 41 RBI on the year.
The Giants hit their first losing streak at the beginning of last week. They got swept by the Minnesota Twins on the road last weekend, and then dropped two of three games to the Arizona Diamondbacks to start the new week. They did sweep the A's due in part to a questionable decision by Mark Kotsay that led to a walk-off win by Wilmer Flores on Saturday night.
In total, they went 4-2 this past week. It is hard to ask for much more after dropping two of the first three games. So, the Giants remained stagnant. They did not gain any ground in the rankings, nor did they lose any ground.
The Giants coming in at No. 8 sounds like a good ranking in these subjective polls. However, the Los Angeles Dodgers (No. 1) and San Diego Padres (No. 4) sit ahead of the Giants. The Diamondbacks at not far behind at No. 13.
In the standings, the Giants sit in third place in a tough NL West division with a 28-19 overall record. They only sit one game behind the Dodgers for the top spot in the division. The Padres are ahead of them in the standings with a 27-18 record. Their .600 winning percentage is only a few basis points ahead of the Giants.
San Francisco did get some help in the standings this weekend. Not only did they sweep the A's, but both the Dodgers and Padres got swept over the weekend. The Dodgers dropped a three-game series to the Los Angeles Angels, whereas the Padres lost three in a row to the Seattle Mariners.
While the Giants have not even played 50 games yet this year, they are getting pretty close to watching the scoreboard on a nightly basis. For now, they are right in the thick of things in a tough NL West division.
