SF Giants reliever likely done for the season after undergoing very rare surgery

At least they caught this before it got worse.

SF Giants reliever José Buttó underwent surgery on Friday to repair an artery in his right arm. The surgery reportedly went well but Buttó is expected to miss five to six months as he recovers so he is likely done for the season.

The last time Buttó was on the mound for the Giants, he simply did not look right. His velocity was down and his command was completely out of whack. That's why it was scary when it came out in the following days that he had a blood clot in his arm that would require surgery.

SF Giants reliever Buttó likely done for season after surgery

It was reported previously in April that Buttó underwent surgery to remove the clot and the prognosis at that point was that he would be out two to four months. This is the second surgery Buttó has undergone to try and resolve the issue in his arm.

On Buttó's Instagram, he posted the following caption along with a picture of him giving a thumbs up in a hospital bed presumably after the procedure: "Yesterday, I underwent a very rare surgery for baseball to repair a blood clot in my armpit that was limiting my movement and making it painful to pitch...Now focused on healing and recovering 100% to be back on the mound."

While it may not be the exact same thing, many were reminded of when Tristan Beck underwent surgery a few years ago to remove an aneurysm in his throwing arm. He has come back and made a full recovery so hopefully the same happens with Buttó.

It's a shame that this happened for Buttó because he figured to be a key part of San Francisco's bullpen this season. The Giants acquired him in the trade that sent Tyler Rogers to the New York Mets last season and he seemed like a guy who could be a solid seventh inning arm.

He did at least get to have a little glory this year as he was a key member of Team Venezuela on its way to winning the World Baseball Classic. He pitched really well in the competition as he allowed no runs in five appearances and looked like he might be on the verge of a big year for the Giants. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be.

Buttó will go on the 60-day IL at some point. After he was put on the 15-day IL the Giants called up Blade Tidwell who has looked quite good so far, pitching to a 2.25 ERA in eight appearances.

The bullpen is still very much a work in progress for San Francisco but a lot of their arms have shown promise. Buttó will likely not be part of the equation this year unless he is able to come back in September after a speedy recovery, but after a surgery like this patience is probably the best strategy. Hopefully he recovers fully and can pitch without pain when he gets back on the mound.
