After the SF Giants fired manager Bob Melvin and replaced him with Tony Vitello, the next logical step seemed to be figuring out the coaching staff. Several months later, the Giants have yet to finalize the coaching staff ahead of the 2026 season.
This situation was noteworthy a few weeks ago as our own Jeff Young took note. However, the fact that the Giants have still yet to formally announce the staff is a bit surprising.
SF Giants have surprisingly not announced coaching staff
We know who basically all of the staff members will be as many of the names have already been reported, but it seems the Giants are still finalizing roles and titles which is the cause for the hold up.
Giants insider Alex Pavlovic spoke about this on a recent episode of the Giants Talk podcast and had the following to say: "Almost all of it has been reported. There's some specifics that are not known outside of the building. But I can make a list right now of just everyone who's on that staff."
So, the Giants at the very least know who is on their staff but it seems like some of the finer points are still being worked out. It is probably not a cause for concern or a sign of dysfunction, but it is still odd at the very least.
We know a few coaches from the previous staff will be held over. We also know that Ron Washington will serve as an infield coach, Jayce Tingler will serve in some sort of bench coach capacity, Hunter Mense will be the hitting coach, Jesse Chavez will be the bullpen coach, Justin Meccage will be the pitching coach, and Frank Anderson, who was Vitello's pitching guru at the University of Tennessee, will serve in some sort of pitching capacity.
It is not known for sure who the base coaches will be, so maybe that is a sticking point the team is still trying to get ironed out.
Ultimately, the Giants will get this figured out and the delay will be an odd footnote, but what is important is that there will be a ton of pressure on this staff to squeeze every ounce of production out of a roster that is not appreciably better than the one the Giants fielded last season.
The Giants are clearly hoping this staff can make internal improvements that will take the team to the next level. It is a big bet, and once the staff is formally announced we can get a full picture of what things will look like entering 2026.
