Landen Roupp was placed on the injured list on Friday with right elbow infammation. The SF Giants are hopeful that the injury is not serious, and that he only misses a couple of starts.
SF Giants provide hopeful injury update for Landen Roupp
Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that an MRI on Roupp's elbow came back clean. That is as encouraging an update as there can be given the nature of the injury.
Nevertheless, it is a tough blow to the starting rotation. Roupp, along with Robbie Ray and Logan Webb, helped solidify the front of the rotation. However, the back of the rotation, including Hayden Birdsong and Justin Verlander, had struggled quite a bit.
The Giants recently optioned Birdsong back to Triple-A after a rough start against the Atlanta Braves last week. In that start, he allowed four earned runs on one hit and four walks without recording an out.
On the other hand, Verlander has not been that sharp either. The future Hall of Famer did notch his first win of the season in his last start. On the year, he has a 4.70 ERA across 17 starts. The Giants will need him to pitch better in the second half.
Landen Roupp has been one of the biggest surprises for the Giants this season. He put together a strong spring training and earned the final spot in the rotation. Roupp had been competing with Birdsong for that spot, and both threw the ball well in the Cactus League.
The right-handed hurler was not too sharp in the first month of the year, with a 5.10 ERA in six starts. However, the underlying numbers were much more promising. The Giants stuck with him in the rotation, and their patience has been rewarded.
Since the start of May, Roupp has a 2.27 ERA in 14 starts. This includes a tough start against the Los Angeles Dodgers in June, where he allowed six earned runs across 1.2 innings in an 11-5 loss. That was really his only poor outing during that stretch.
The 26-year-old pitcher is inching toward an innings threshold. He currently sits at 101.1 innings in 2025, which is just shy of his career high (107.1 innings) in that category set back in 2022. Regardless of how the season finishes, Roupp has made a case to be in the club's rotation plans for 2025 and beyond.
