The SF Giants (18-10) and Texas Rangers (15-12) have split the first two games of a three-game series. San Francisco will lean on Jordan Hicks to help them clinch another series win.
SF Giants probable pitchers & starting lineup vs. Texas Rangers, April 27
Hicks' ERA has ballooned to 6.59 after allowing at least five earned runs to score in each of his last three starts. That number does need to improve quickly, but there is a case to be made that he has pitched better than that.
In his last start, he yielded five earned runs in five innings against the Milwaukee Brewers. There were some defensive miscues and fluky hits that led to such a rough outing. He does not strike out hitters at a high rate, so he will be BABIP'd from time to time.
The veteran pitcher has registered a 3.84 xERA, 3.98 FIP, and 4.16 xFIP. He has induced a ground ball in 56.9 percent of batted ball events and only allowed two home runs in 27.1 innings (0.66 HR/9) this season.
That said, Hicks has struggled to avoid the big inning in many of his starts. He will need to pitch more efficiently and keep the Giants in the game if he is to continue throwing in the rotation.
Who is hot for the SF Giants?
Heliot Ramos has been stuck in a rough slump since a strong first week of the season. He collected two hits and a walk in three at-bats in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Rangers. In the past seven games, the right-handed bat has tallied seven hits with one RBI in 23 at-bats.
Who are the SF Giants facing?
The Giants are facing off against Jack Leiter. Leiter has a 0.90 ERA with 10 strikeouts and only one walk in 10 innings of work for the Rangers. The young pitcher will feature a high-90's fastball with a slider, changeup, and curveball. Leiter leans more on his four-seamer, but he will also throw a healthy number of sinkers.
