SF Giants probable pitchers & starting lineup vs. San Diego Padres, March 9 (Game 2)

The Giants are approaching this season with fewer workload restrictions for some of their younger starting pitchers. This includes Hicks, who has spent the bulk of his major league career in the bullpen.

The hard-throwing pitcher did make 20 starts for the Giants last year but ran out of gas as the season progressed. He spent a lot of time in the gym this offseason, putting on weight to better handle the grind of a long season. Hicks has made it a goal to prove he can stick in the rotation while aiming to make 30 starts this year.

The 28-year-old pitcher was quite good through the first two months of 2024, recording a 2.70 ERA in 12 starts. However, his production on the mound slipped quickly after that as he dealt with reaching a new career-high in innings pitched with 109.2. Overall, he tallied a 4.10 ERA in 29 appearances while finishing the year in the bullpen.

Who is hot for the SF Giants?

Matt Chapman looks to be ready for the regular season. He added two hits, including a home run, and three RBI in a 7-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. Overall, he has tallied eight hits with four home runs and eight RBI in 15 at-bats this spring. Time to start the year.

Who are the SF Giants facing?

The Giants will be facing off against veteran starter Nick Pivetta He joined the Padres this offseason in what feels like a good deal for San Diego. He posted a 4.14 ERA in 27 outings for the Boston Red Sox last year. Pivetta will mix in a mid-90's four-seam fastball with a sweeper, curveball, cutter, and slider. The sweeper is his go-to secondary offering.
