The SF Giants (19-10) begin a two-game series against the San Diego Padres (17-11) in a matchup between division rivals. Logan Webb will take the ball for San Francisco, as he looks to continue a strong start.
SF Giants probable pitchers & starting lineup vs. San Diego Padres, April 29
The Giants went 17 straight days without a day off before Monday. This looked to be a good litmus test for them and they did not disappoint. The Giants went 10-7 while facing off against some good teams like the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Texas Rangers.
There has been a notable shift in Webb's in favor of his sweeper while using his changeup less often. In recent seasons, he leaned heavily on a sinker-changeup combination, but the sweeper gives him another swing-and-miss option. Both the changuep and sweeper have produced high whiff rates, leading to a spike in his strikeout rate to 10.9 K/9.
In addition to this, Webb is still inducing a ground ball in 55.7 percent of batted-ball events. The high strikeout and ground ball rates are a combination that could take his game to the next level if he is able to maintain them.
Who is hot for the SF Giants?
Christian Koss has not done much at the plate in his young MLB career. However, he had a couple of key moments over the weekend. The first was when he recorded his first career RBI in a 3-2 win over the Rangers. Another play that stood out was a sac bunt in the bottom of the ninth inning of Saturday's game. The play moved Heliot Ramos to third base, and he scored on a walk-off single from Patrick Bailey in the very next at-bat.
Who are the SF Giants facing?
The Giants will have a tough matchup on their hands with Nick Pivetta on the mound. The veteran pitcher has tallied a 1.20 ERA through five starts this season. He throws a mid-90's fastball with a curveball, sweeper, and cutter.
