The SF Giants (20-13) got back in the win column on Friday night. They will lean on Jordan Hicks to keep that going, as they take on the Colorado Rockies (6-26) in the third game of a four-game series.
SF Giants probable pitchers & starting lineup vs. Colorado Rockies, May 3
The Rockies are off to a horrid start, but they did manage to strike a comeback win against the Giants on Thursday night. This put pressure on the Giants to win Friday night's game because they have to take advantage of the series against a struggling team. At the very least, the Giants have to split the series, but a series win is well within reach.
Hicks will take the hill for San Francisco. The hard-throwing righty has pitched to a 6.12 ERA in six starts this season. He had a stretch of three games where he allowed at least five earned runs. Hicks snapped that streak in his last outing against the Texas Rangers, allowing two earned runs in five frames in a 3-2 win.
Hicks' underlying numbers all suggest he has pitched better than his ERA would indicate. For example, he has a 3.68 FIP on the year. He does a nice job of keeping the ball on the ground (58.9 percent ground ball rate) and in the park (0.56 HR/9).
Who is hot for the SF Giants?
Willy Adames has been quietly turning it around lately, even if he went hitless in Friday's 4-0 win over the Rockies. Since April 19, he has tallied 12 hits in 47 at-bats. The power numbers still have not shown up yet, but the walks (7) are up and the strikeouts (9) are down during that stretch.
Who are the SF Giants facing?
The Giants face off against the terrifying challenge of the pitching they have never seen before in Bradley Blalock. Blalock has allowed eight earned runs in seven frames this season. He features a mid-90's four-seamer with a splitter, cutter, slider, and curveball.
