The SF Giants (8-3) face off against the Chicago Cubs (10-3) on the road. Landen Roupp will take the slab for the Giants as he makes his fourth start of the Cactus League.
SF Giants probable pitchers & starting lineup vs. Chicago Cubs, March 9 (Game 1)
Roupp has been the Giants' best pitcher in camp and has put himself firmly in position to win the final rotation spot. Hayden Birdsong and Kyle Harrison have been in the competition as well but Harrison had a poor outing earlier this spring.
On the other hand, Roupp has been nearly perfect this spring. He has yielded just one hit across 8.1 frames with 11 strikeouts against only one walk. Roupp pitched to a 3.58 ERA in 23 outings for San Francisco last year. This included a strong finish that left a positive impression with the coaching staff.
Who is hot for the SF Giants?
Luis Matos is putting together a solid spring and is the likely frontrunner to be the team's fourth outfielder. He has tallied nine hits, including a two doubles and one home run, with seven RBI in 27 at-bats. He does lead the team in at-bats currently, which is a sign of who the team wants to see.
Who are the SF Giants facing?
The Giants will be facing off against veteran pitcher Jameson Taillon. Taillon is coming off of a solid year with the Cubs, where he recorded a 3.27 ERA in 28 starts. He has appeared in one game so far, allowing one earned run across two innings. The righty pitcher will fill up the strike zone with a pitch mix that includes a pair of low-90's fastballs with a cutter, sweeper, and curveball.
