While it was pretty obvious that the minor moves the SF Giants made last offseason would not be enough to make their bullpen good in any way shape or form, that doesn’t mean all the moves they made were completely bad. Signing Jason Foley was actually not a bad idea even if it didn’t work out perfectly.
Foley hadn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2024 due to a shoulder injury so the Giants signed him knowing he probably wouldn’t be ready to pitch until midseason and maybe their thinking was he’d be a nice reinforcement to add to the mix.
Clearly, they were too optimistic in what they had as Buster Posey admitted after the season. If the bullpen was a trail mix, there were a lot of raisins and nuts but not too many M&Ms. Foley was definitely one of the raisins.
He had a 4.15 ERA in 24 appearances on the season which isn’t terrible but he had 15 strikeouts compared to 11 walks in 26 innings which is not a great ratio.
Foley was a very solid reliever for the Detroit Tigers from 2021 to 2024. He had a 3.16 ERA in 210 games and even had 28 saves in 2024 so it wasn’t completely crazy to sign him thinking that 2026 could allow him to get back in the swing of things and then 2027 could be when he really gets back to what he was at his best in Detroit.
Giants need a different buullpen strategy in 2027
The problem is that the Giants basically only signed guys like Foley or Sam Hentges who were coming off injury or they signed guys to minor league contracts. No one they signed was fully healthy and coming off a solid major league season which is something they’ll have to rectify in the offseason.
Now the question with Foley is whether the Giants will bring him back next season. MLB Trade Rumors projects he will earn $2.3 million next season which may be a little expensive but if they can sign him to a $2 million one-year deal to avoid arbitration that would not be awful. Maybe he could be a sixth-inning arm next season or something like that. It’s not and to have some more bullpen depth too and they can move on from him if he struggles.
The bullpen needs a makeover so it might make sense to non-tender Foley but he’s been a solid reliever in the past so they may give him a shot to prove he can recapture his old form.
