SF Giants pad major league lead in surprising offensive category against San Diego Padres

On Friday night, the SF Giants dropped the opener against the San Diego Padres by a score of 7-5. While it was mostly a forgettable night, they did blast their league-leading ninth grand slam of the season.

Last week, the Giants finally recorded their first sequential sweep of the season against the St. Louis Cardinals. Technically, they also had two separate sweeps against the Atlanta Braves. However, the sweep against the Cardinals was, as the kids call it, “ethical.”

The next box they need to check off is putting together a four-game winning streak. They are running out of time for that one.

Speaking of technicalities, the Giants won three straight games last week. They had a day off on Thursday, but the San Jose Giants played against the Stockton Ports and won that game. In my book, a team named the Giants won on four straight days, so that is a four-game winning streak.

On a different note, who had the Giants leading baseball in grand slams? On Friday night, Rafael Devers blasted his second grand slam of the season, giving him 36 home runs on the year and marked the ninth grand slam of the season for San Francisco.

SF Giants are not hitting a lot of home runs but they are hitting a lot of grand slams

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs are second with seven grand slams. Grand slams are hard to come by, so a lot would have to go right for either team to surpass the Giants.

This may not be news to you, but the Giants have not been known for hitting home runs this year. They have 167 long balls, which sits in the middle of the pack.

Devers accounts for about 22 percent of those home runs. While they have not been known for home runs, that has not been the case with the bases loaded. If you can believe it, the Giants are one of the best teams in those spots. Their 128 wRC+ with the bases loaded is the fifth-best mark in baseball.

Grand slams account for about five percent of the club’s home runs, which does not sound like a lot, but about one of every 25 home runs come with the bases loaded. This is a team that had gone months without hitting a three-run home run in recent seasons.
