The SF Giants trimmed the camp roster ahead of the final weekend of spring training. Both Tristan Beck and Wade Meckler were optioned to the minors, per the team's transaction log.
SF Giants option a pair of players, reassign 3 more to minor league camp
The Giants also reassigned three non-roster invitees to minor league camp. This included Enny Romero, Logan Porter, and Jake Lamb according to Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle.
The phrasing is slightly different if a player is on the 40-man roster or a non-roster invite, but the end result is the same. It means that those five players will not make the Opening Day roster barring a surprise change.
Optioning Tristan Beck and Wade Meckler is not too surprising. Beck yielded four earned runs across 7.2 frames this spring. The bullpen is relatively full at this point, especially if the Giants add Lou Trivino and Joey Lucchesi to the mix. It means that there is a good chance that a reliever who has had a solid camp will start the year in the minors along with Beck.
Meckler was an interesting name to follow early in spring training. The speedy outfielder took ground balls at second base near the end of last season but did not see time at that position this spring. He tallied seven hits, all singles, in 28 Cactus League at-bats.
Along with Lucchesi, Enny Romero was the only other remaining non-roster left-handed reliever in camp. With him being reassigned, it likely means that Lucchesi could win a spot on the Opening Day roster if the Giants decide to carry two lefty relievers with Erik Miller being the top leverage option.
Jake Lamb recorded nine hits in 33 at-bats in Arizona. The Giants added him late in the offseason and liked the idea of bringing more competition to the mix from the left side. That said, there was no obvious role for him on this roster.
Lastly, Logan Porter will likely see time at catcher in Sacramento. Whether that is as a starter or backup remains to be seen and depends on what the Giants do with Max Stassi. Porter had two hits in 16 at-bats.
