If one can remember back to the offseason when rumors run rampant, there was some reporting that linked the SF Giants to Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte. Supposedly the Giants were pursuing some sort of trade for Marte that obviously never materialized. Now, Marte is on fire and has torched the Giants in the last week.
Entering San Francisco’s game against the D-backs on May 18, Marte was hitting an uncharacteristic .216/.272/.365. Fast forward to today and he is now hitting .273/.324/.478 with nine home runs and 32 runs batted in. He’s hit three home runs against the Giants and driven in 12 runs against them since the start of the series last week.
Marte has been one of the better second basemen in the game in recent years. He made the NL All-Star team in 2024 and 2025 and is on pace to do the same this season.
Giants were rumored to have interest in a ton of second basemen during the offseason
It’s unclear what it would have taken for the Giants to land Marte and it’s even less clear if they actually were interested in him during the offseason or if that was just sheer speculation. It was heavily reported that the Giants were looking to upgrade at second base in the offseason which is supremely ironic now considering the fact that if they just sat on their hands Casey Schmitt would have been their starting second baseman to begin the year and he’s been their best hitter.
There were rumors connecting them to CJ Abrams, Nico Hoerner, and Brendan Donovan as well as Marte so maybe the Giants were just kicking the tires on everyone. Abrams has been amazing this year and Hoerner has been his usual self so landing one of those guys would have been sweet too even though they were clearly long-shots.
Ultimately, the Giants ended up signing Luis Arraez and he’s been the team’s second-best hitter after Schmitt so it’s not like the Giants haven’t gotten any production at all from second base this year. It's created a bit of a problem for them though as they may end up having to trade Arraez to make room for all of their infielders.
Still, it’s funny to think that in some alternate universe maybe the Giants pulled off a trade for Marte and in our current bleak universe Marte is absolutely owning them over the course of the last 10 days.
