The SF Giants just wrapped up a three-game series sweep against the Atlanta Braves this weekend. They have Monday off, but on Tuesday they will begin a six-game road trip in Denver against the Colorado Rockies. Let's take a look at some news items.
SF Giants news: trade with Mets, catcher outrighted, NL West remains tight
Justin Garza traded to New York Mets
The Giants made a minor transaction over the weekend as they traded right-handed reliever Justin Garza to the New York Mets in exchange for cash considerations.
San Francisco signed Garza to a minor league contract last year but he was never called up to the big leagues. Last season in Sacramento he had a 3.42 ERA in 52 and 2/3 innings. He followed that up with a rough 2025 for the River Cats with a 6.11 ERA in 17 and 2/3 innings pitched.
Best of luck in New York, Mr. Garza. We hardly knew ye.
Sam Huff outrighted to Triple-A
As part of the roster moves the Giants made last week, the team designated catcher Sam Huff for assignment. He had struggled to hit much for the Giants, slashing .208/.259/.340 with two homers and four runs batted in.
Even though the Giants DFA'd him, Huff was not claimed by any other team so he cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento. As Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area noted, the Giants were a little short on catching depth so the fact that they were able to retain Huff helps things in that regard.
We could definitely see Huff again this season. He has familiarity with the big league pitching staff, and if Andrew Kninzer ends up not doing much with the bat then the team may decide to bring him back to the big leagues.
NL West remains tight
All season long, the National League West has been tight. The Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and Arizona Diamondbacks all have a lot of talent. Yet, the Giants remain right in the thick of things as they are just one game back of Los Angeles.
This next road trip will be important for the Giants as they will face off against the Colorado Rockies before going against the Dodgers for the first time this season Friday through Sunday. San Francisco is going to need to take care of business against a Rockies team that is 12-52 on the year so they can maintain momentum before taking on their arch rival.
San Francisco will enjoy today's day off, but they will get back after it tomorrow night against the Rockies.
