Much of this season has been doom and gloom for the SF Giants, but after a three-game win streak in which the team has scored 31 runs (with 30 of those runs coming in the last two games) it is worth taking at least a moment to celebrate.
There are also some other Giants nuggets you may have missed what with all the home runs and grand slams the team has been smashing recently.
SF Giants news nuggets for the weekend
Offense makes history
Can you believe this is the same offense that looked completely inept in the first series of the year against the New York Yankees?
According to Sarah Langs, this is the first time since 1944 that the Giants scored 30 or more runs in a two-game span. That’s pretty remarkable and one could make the argument the last two games combined were the most impressive offensive output the team has had since moving to San Francisco.
Coming into the year it seemed like the lineup on paper, especially whenever Bryce Eldridge was added to the mix, could be pretty good. The Giants are finally delivering on that promise.
The Giants went on a run late last season thanks in large part to an offensive surge so maybe they can go on a run again and try to slowly climb back to .500. The pitching still remains a very big question mark though.
Heliot Ramos' return from injury
While Heliot Ramos has been a key offensive contributor the last two seasons, it’s remarkable the offense has exploded like this without him in the lineup.
The emergence of Casey Schmitt is a big reason for that since he is hitting the snot out of the ball while playing a serviceable left field.
But when Ramos comes back from injury that could make the lineup even stronger although it could create come complications.
Ramos has reportedly started a hitting progression and is rehabbing in Arizona as he tries to come back from his quad injury. His return date is listed as “possibly June” so there isn’t a super clear timetable but the Giants may not be in a rush to get him back if the offense keeps humming.
Braves swap former Giants catchers
In some former Giants news, the Atlanta Braves DFA’d catcher Chadwick Tromp after acquiring Austin Wynns from the Los Angeles Angels.
Tromp played for the Giants in 2020 and 2021 and was doing well for the Braves earlier this season but fell off as of late.
As for Wynns, he played for San Francisco in 2022 and 2023 and has bounced around a bit since then. Wynns will join former Giants like Mauricio Dubon, Mike Yastrzemski, and Dominic Smith on Atlanta. At least we know what team to cheer for in the playoffs especially since the Giants will need to make up a lot of ground and do something pretty special to play in October.
