SF Giants News: Duane Kuiper's hot mic moment, Harrison Bader sparks scooter debate

The SF Giants actually won a game on Tuesday night which is cause for celebration even if wins and losses probably aren’t the main imperative for the rest of the season. Still, it’s good for these younger players to at least get a taste of winning so it doesn’t feel completely unfamiliar if they do it in the future.

There are a couple of fun news nuggets surrounding the team that you might have missed recently so let’s dive right in.

SF Giants news bits as season winds down

Duane Kuiper hot mic

For eagle-eared viewers of Tuesday night’s game, you may have caught a moment where broadcaster Duane Kuiper said something as the broadcast cut to commercial.

The moment was caught by the great “no context giants” social media account:

Kuiper says, “By the way, do you want Mike Maddux as your pitching-“ before it cuts off. He was referring to ex-Los Angeles Angels pitching coach Mike Maddux who just got fired by the Angels.

Maddux, the older brother of Greg Maddux, was a decent pitcher in his own right and has been a pitching coach for years, bouncing around from team to team.

He played during the same era as Kuiper and Mike Krukow so they know the guy and it’s probably fun for them to keep tabs on their old peers. I’m interested to hear what Kuiper was going to say next, though. 

It would be really fun to hear a Giants broadcast without commercial breaks where we just got to hear Kruk and Kuip banter between innings. Maybe if we petition the Giants we can get that at least once before Krukow’s retirement at the end of the year.

Harrison Bader sparks scooter debate

Outfielder Harrison Bader may have crashed his scooter into a fire engine in San Francisco, but the ripple effects have been felt across the country. A recent article in The Athletic dove into how lots of MLB players use scooters and how it’s created a little unease among front offices. Players around MLB are now being asked about their scooter habits.

The current collective bargaining agreement doesn’t have any language prohibiting scooter use the way it does other vehicles like motorcycles, but maybe some will want that amended with the current CBA set to expire later this year.

Imagine a world in which MLB and the MLBPA finally come to some sort of an agreement over big issues like a salary cap but then the final sticking point is whether players are allowed to ride scooters or not. 

Harrison Bader may single-handedly cancel the entire 2027 season due to his antics. Who knew one scooter incident could cause so much trouble.

In all seriousness though, the Giants should look for a way to void Bader’s remaining contract because that sort of negligent behavior is just not acceptable. Plus, I’d rather see Drew Gilbert and Jonah Cox playing center next year over Bader anyway.

Even in a dull year there’s always interesting things happening with the Giants so we will have to see what this final month and a half has in store for us.
