The SF Giants lost another stinker on Tuesday night to the Arizona Diamondbacks. They are now 0-8 against them on the season and have to play them again on Wednesday night so fingers crossed they can actually defeat them.
While last night’s game was pretty dull from the start there were at least a few important or noteworthy things that happened so let’s dive right in.
SF Giants news updates after another dispiriting loss
Matt Chapman injury
Third baseman Matt Chapman injured himself late in the game and had to be removed. He charged in on a ground ball and made the play but was noticeably in pain afterwards.
He tried to take his at-bat in the top half of the next inning but struggled to get down the first-base line after popping the ball up and was removed from the game.
After the game Chapman said it was an abdominal injury he’s been dealing with for a while but hasn’t really flared up until Tuesday. He will get an MRI on Wednesday and with Willy Adames also dealing with an injury the Giants may decide to put one of them on the IL and call up Christian Koss so they actually have four infielders on the roster.
Cox’s new position
Speaking of a lack of infielders, the Giants had to employ an infield arrangement they were surely hoping to avoid on Tuesday night after Chapman was removed. The Giants moved Luis Arraez from second base to third base and brought outfielder Jonah Cox in off the bench to play second base.
He hadn’t played second base as a professional since 2024 when he was with the San Jose Giants but he looked quite good and even made a diving play out there. Infield coach Ron Washington really can work some wonders as he just recently took Cox under his tutelage.

Roupp is “pathetic”
It was another rough outing for starting pitcher Landen Roupp on Tuesday as he gave up six earned runs in 2 and 2/3 innings of work. In his own estimation, he said: “I've been pretty pathetic for the last two months."
He’s got a point. June has been especially rough as he’s had a 7.14 ERA in six starts. He now has a 4.55 ERA on the season and the team has lost each of his last 11 starts.
This season stinks pretty much any way you slice it and Tuesday’s combination of sloppiness, injuries, and poor play all around (except for Luis Arraez of course who almost hit for the cycle) was just a microcosm of the entire year.
